My town is full of people who like to beat the system. That's why, when I went to my mother's apartment building today, there was no place to park. She lives next to a big city park, and the street was lined with the cars of people who don't want to pay to park close to the picnic areas, inside the park, but prefer to walk in from the street so as not to get ripped off by the city. This makes for comical scenes: large families struggling to carry in barbecue grills and propane tanks, lugging coolers heavy with raw meats, canned beverages, and block ice down the street, all so they don't have to pay the ONE DOLLAR parking fee. And the worst part is, after they've laid in the sun for hours, getting drowsy and fat and intoxicated, they have to pack up all their shit and lug it back up the long incline to the park entrance. That's right---there's a big slope as you come into the park, which you barely notice if you're driving. But if you're walking, woe betide ye.

P.S.: Happy birthday, Dad. Wish you were here.
