Hope your arm feels all better soon. I found "presciption Aleve" to be fairly worthless myself. My doctor prescribed it after my c-section. What's with these doctors anyway?

Anyone who is not a pro athelete or under the age of 18 should totally avoid the butterfly stroke. It's evil. I hope your arm is feeling better soon, sweetie.

Commenting as requested! Swam the butterfly in high school. I loved it and hated it both. Mad exhilaration when my stroke was right, excruciating when it was off. Kudos to you for going for it, even if you did yourself a damage. I doubt I could do half a length these days. ~LA

The inward rotation of the arm during the butterfly is guaranteed to aggravate any rotator cuff instablity/weakness. Rotator cuff injuries are often referred to as an impingement syndrome. The main treatment is to strengthen the shoulder 'girdle' which means strengthening the upper back muscles. These muscles are rarely targeted for strengthening, yet they are necessary for pulling the shoulders back and down, away from putting pressure on the nerves within the ball of the shoulder. There is a ton of info on this syndrome on the web, see if your library has the ever-popular 7-minute Rotator Cuff Solution. I still do physical therapy at home twice a week (down from five) to prevent the terrible, excruciating pain that can develop from ignoring impingement. Good luck.
