Duff's sister-in-law, Tess, had her baby today, six weeks early. The baby weighs less than four pounds. She was induced, then had an emergency C-section because so much was going wrong. Pre-eclampsia, low red blood cell count, bleeding, and before that they had her on bedrest because of premature labor, cramps, and a burst cyst.

Then when they got the baby out, not only was the placenta 30 percent detached (which explains the bleeding), but the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck. Twice.

She had trouble getting pregnant in the first place and saw a fertility specialist. She has endometriosis. I can't help but wonder if they will try to have another. Such a nightmare. And I can't help but be glad none of that stuff happened to me. Still, it doesn't seem entirely fair for us to skate through pregnancy while they have all the problems.

At least they're both okay. The baby weighs exactly half of what Criminy weighed at birth. And you'll recall that Criminy was a twin. I went out and bought a couple of preemie outfits that Duff's father will carry back when he flies home tomorrow. Duff's mother already flew back yesterday.
